A Member Welfare Project receives Approval
This week we received approval for a member welfare project that will provide a dripline irrigation system for several member families on the island of Santo Antão.
Presidente Joaquim, president of the Ribeira Grande branch, will be the project leader. This is one of the locations where the driplines will be installed. |
Another location that will received the driplines.
The dripline irrigation system will allow the families to grow fruits and vegetables year round rather than rely on a short growing season in the fall when a small amount of rain falls. |
This family will also receive the driplines.
The two boys were just getting ready to run off to school. |
Since joining the church a few years ago, the life of this man and his family has completely changed.
Instead of using his small amount of earnings on alcohol, he has used the money to construct his own home. He said that his life is much better and much happier. |
This is their rather nice living area.
What is also surprising is that there is a 100 foot cliff just outside the window. |
A Sunday Stroll
This week we decided to attend the Mindelo 4th Ward which meets in the stake center. We walked the 2.1 km as quickly as possible.
The Primary children preparing for a future program. |
Like father like son.
This member brought his son. They were together for the entire three hour block. |
After church we decided to take a leisurely stroll back to our home.
We walked for a while with a group of young single adults. The girl on the right in the black outfit was baptized yesterday and confirmed in sacrament meeting today. |
As we walked we decided to take a few pictures of the different neighborhoods.
These homes are quite typical. Using cement blocks for construction, these homes can be added to at any time. |
Often homes are started but never completed.
The poorer people live higher up the hill. The view may be great but it is quite a chore to haul water every day. |
The ever present black, volcanic cobblestones. |
Some homes are painted and others are not.
As we get closer to downtown, the homes become closer together. |
Once we get over the hill, Mindelo Bay comes into view. The island of Santo Antão is in the distance. |
One of the nicer homes that we passed. |
