Self-reliance and Cataracts

Self-reliance and Cataracts

Another trip to Santo Antão
Bananas, bananas, bananas.

One of our member welfare projects requires that the members attend a self reliance class.  Our purpose for going to Santo Antão was to get the class started.  Presidente Joaquim in the blue shirt is the facilitator of the class.
This was a lesson on starting and growing your own business.  Once the dripline irrigation systems are installed, these members will have extra produce to sell.  The first step of the class is to give the group a name.  They decided to call themselves "Victorious".

Cataracts

This weekend we have been busy with two eye doctors that arrived from the United States.  They are here to perform cataract surgeries on three hundred patients.
Doctor Kenn Turley and Doctor Ron Snow both from St. George, Utah.

On Saturday the two doctors setup the operating room in preparation for the operations to be done over the next two weeks.
Fortunately the two microscopes were in excellent condition.  This is one of the operating rooms at the hospital.

Dr. Snow attends primary.
Since Dr. Snow does not speak Portuguese, he felt much more comfortable in Primary.

Called to Serve

Tonight we attended a family home evening at the City Chapel and a young man opened his mission call.
Cesaltino de Brito has been called to the Brazil Belêm mission and will report to the MTC in São Paulo on May 15th.

The Couple of the Week

Elder and Sister Cary
They are serving as humanitarian aid missionaries in Montenegro and will finish their mission in April of this year.

Sunday Dinner

Instead of having two missionaries for Sunday dinner, we had two eye surgeons.
Elder Erickson did not have to wash the Sunday dishes.

  1. Dan and Diane.. I look forward to your report each Sunday.. and love the pictures. I can feel your love for the people and your mission. Also.. it looks like Diane is holding a baby in the self reliance meeting. I loved seeing that! It's one of the ways I remember her most.. with a baby on her lap.. and sometimes, it was one of mine!
    I love you both..

  2. Hi Sue Ann,
We love you too. Thanks for your encouragement. We love little notes from friends back home. We are have the time of our lives here in Cape Verde. We love our Savior and we are so grateful to be able to serve Him doing this work. How is your family? How many grandchildren do you have now? Have a great New Year. Love Sister Erickson
